Wheel Chair Sports Activities: Wheelchair Tennis

Among all wheel chair sports activities, tennis is one of the fastest growing and most challenging. To meet this demand, USA Tennis offers programs geared towards the wheel chair player.

Rules are the same as stand-up tennis, except the player is allowed two bounces of the ball.

Wheel chair tennis provides persons with disabilities the opportunity to share in the sport with their peers and family, whether able-bodied or disabled.

Proficient wheel chair users can play and actively compete against stand-up players.

Playing wheel chair tennis adds to socialization and the normalization of life after sustaining a disabling injury.

A tennis player must have a medically diagnosed, mobility-related disability, with a substantial or total loss of function in one or more extremities. The player must master the game and the wheel chair.

Learning mobility on the court is exciting and challenging, and helps build strength and cardiovascular ability.

Wheelchair Rugby

Wheelchair rugby was introduced in the United States in 1981 by Brad Mikkelsen, who, with the aid of the University of North Dakota's Disabled Student Services, formed the first team and changed the game's name within the United States to Quad Rugby.

Wheel chair Rugby is now a Paralympic Games sport, having first been a demonstration sport at the 1996 Paralympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia. Some of the official rules include:

  • The game is played on a regular-sized basketball court by four players from each team.
  • During the games, team players pass a regulation sized volleyball back and forth.
  • The team must pass the ball into the opponent's half-court within 15 seconds.
  • A player with the ball must pass or dribble it within 10 seconds.
  • Goals are scored like touchdowns in American Football: thus to score a goal the ball carrier must enter the opposing team's end zone.
